'Britmaxxing' at Olympia
Navigating a tech policy blitz
Good morning, I'm writing this late at night on a wobbly train, while trying to get a year's worth of announcements into a five-minute briefing. Apologies in advance for all the typos 😜.
Today's newsletter is broken down into three parts: London Tech Week news, the AI hardware plan and the outcomes of the AI Adoption Summit.
Happening Today 📆
Britmaxxing at Olympia: Tech secretary Liz Kendall gives a speech to London Tech Week at 12:45pm where she'll add to yesterday's flood of announcements. Her department is internally referring to it as a "Britmaxxing" speech. ARIA's Kathleen Fisher and Matt Clifford chat at 10:30am about how the research agency is targeting "real-world" impact. The Founders' Stage has sessions this morning with Wayve's Alex Kendall, Fuse Energy founder Alan Chang and Starling Bank's Anne Boden. CuspAI's chief executive Chad Edwards and AI minister Kanishka Narayan talk about how AI is transforming materials research at 2:05pm on the Deep Tech Stage.
Events: The Chancellor hosts an event at No.11 with Enterprise Nation, Sage, Google, Block, and Dell to celebrate UK SMEs. Civo launches a digital sovereignty report at an event this evening with shadow tech secretary Julia Lopez, OpenUK CEO Amanda Brock and Locai Labs chairman Paul Drayson. Founders Forum hosts its annual Gala Dinner tonight.
What the people think of all this: In Parliament it's the launch of the UK AI Compass this evening showing how far the public's views on AI differ from government policy.
Jobs talk: LinkedIn hosts a panel at Chatham House at 11am on AI's impact on the labour market. Research they're publishing today shows UK business confidence at a three-year low, but entrepreneurship is up 36 percent year-on-year as AI lowers the barriers to starting a business. Meanwhile, jobs with the highest AI exposure have not seen sharper hiring declines.
