Five names, one job
The runners and riders for tech secretary.
Good morning and welcome back,
I've been too busy recovering from the England game to do much serious journalism this weekend, so instead you've got a 'runners and riders' list for the next tech secretary.
This is based on educated guesses, rather than a briefing from an "insider" (or what someone who once bought Burnham a Pret said). The likelihood scores I give each candidate are 100 percent vibes-based. Bold, I know — judge me in a week.
Happening Today 📆
Parliament: The Lords will discuss AI's impact on jobs at around 2:50pm.
Team Rebuild: The Startup Coalition has published a letter calling on Andy Burnham to "Rebuild Britain" through pension, planning and procurement reforms. Signed by over 100 founders and investors, it reads: "The coming years will be critical in making or breaking Britain as a tech power... All these problems facing our ecosystem are pressing and urgent, but just as urgent are the glaring issues facing the wider economy."
Summer break: The Morning Intelligence will publish as normal until Friday July 24th, but from Monday July 27th to Friday August 28th, I'll publish twice a week (every Tuesday and Friday). My thinking is that nobody needs a niche daily newsletter in August, but equally I don't want to go silent on you for several weeks. You will still get 10 editions in August to enjoy from the beach/sweaty office and from September 1st full service resumes.
