Happening Today 📆
Just ban it: London Mayor Sadiq Khan will call for a social media ban for under-16s at an event at SXSW at 12:15pm. Khan is speaking on a panel about the "manosphere" and will say a ban is the "only way to stem the harms we know are happening right now". Tech secretary Liz Kendall is also moving towards a ban after staying neutral during the consultation which closed last week.
Elsewhere at SXSW: At 3:45pm it's the premiere of a film made by Faculty's Marc Warner that war-games how policymakers can respond to the race to AGI. (More from Marc below). Audrey Tang, Martha Lane Fox and Julia Gillard are also speaking at various venues.
In Parliament: The APPG on semiconductors meets today to look at how to secure a domestic chip supply for defence and national security.
Reports galore: Tech spending in Europe will reach $1.3 trillion this year driven by AI infrastructure investment, according to data published today ahead of London Tech Week. Tech Nation will also publish a report next week showing the UK's AI industry is growing three times faster than France and twice as quickly as Germany.
